Springboks fly-half Elton Jantjies has been banned for four years after using prohibited substance Clenbuterol.
Jantjies was suspended for the breach in August 2023. This resulted in his exclusion from South Africa’s Rugby World Cup squad.
“It with no small amount of shock and sadness that I have to inform you that I received notification earlier this month, from the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport, that a urine sample that I had provided to them in June 2023, returned a positive test for a banned substance, Clenbuterol,” he said in a statement at the time.
South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport chief executive officer Khalid Galant told Rugby365 on Thursday: “The ban is four years. The window period for an appeal has lapsed, so the four-year ban stands.”
Jantjies won the 2019 Rugby World Cup title with the Springboks after reaching three successive Super Rugby finals with the Lions from 2015 to 2017.
In 2022, he was charged with malicious damage to property, after allegedly contravening the Aviation Act during an Emirates flight. The charges were later dropped.
In the same year, he was released from the Springboks squad after an alleged affair with team dietician Zeenat Simjee.
