Batsman Leus du Plooy struck a first-class career-best double-century for Derbyshire against Worcestershire in division two of the County Championship at New Road recently.
Du Plooy was at the crease for almost nine hours en route to 238 not out. He faced 356 deliveries – and struck 25 fours and two sixes.
What Leus du Plooy said
“I would love to play for England one day, even though it is not my birth country,” du Plooy, who was born in South Africa and has a Hungarian passport, told Wisden earlier this year.
“It is a country that I have grown to love and I believe that you can love two countries at once. I’m going to try my best to score as many runs as possible and the rest will take care of itself.
“I firmly believe that I am good enough to represent any country at the international level.”
Du Plooy in South Africa
Du Plooy has played for the Knights, Titans, South Western Districts and Boland in domestic cricket in South Africa.
“I’d love to play for South Africa if I could, and I’d love to play for England if I could,” he told The Cricketer earlier this year, too.
He played for the Joburg Super Kings in the inaugural edition of the SA20 in early 2023. He enjoyed working alongside head coach Stephen Fleming – and has since been selected by the Southern Brave for The Hundred.
“Fleming asked me what my plans were with regards to the SA20 draft. And he convinced me to go back into the draft. But then again you’re not certain that you’re going to be picked up at a specific team,” he added.
“I was really surprised that he picked me up when he did, but I could not be happier because he is an incredible coach.”
Du Plooy in England
Whether du Plooy remains with Derbyshire or moves elsewhere next season remains in the balance. He has reportedly been offered a contract by Middlesex.
